The new “Books Sandwiched In” program for adults will be held on the 2nd Thursday of each month, with new books, dvds and cds for 2010. Bring a brown bag lunch at noon and enjoy reviews, lively discussion and the company of fellow readers. The Library will provide a drink and dessert. You may check out any material presented that catches your interest after the program.

The guide walks you through the basics, from getting started to downloading to burning a CD. In just a few minutes, even the newest user can be enjoying a downloaded title.

Playaways… the newest and smallest audio book!

They’re not an MP3, audio tape or CD player and they’re not software… they are the self contained audio equivalent of a book. Clearly marked buttons give listeners the option of placing digital bookmarks and controlling the speed of the narrator’s voice, all while easily moving forward and backward through chapters.

Additionally, each Playaway has a universal headphone jack that works with almost any type of headphone or mobility accessory. If you don’t have headphones, earbuds may be purchased for $1 at the circulation desk and then are yours to keep.

Playaways come in Adult fiction and nonfiction, Children’s fiction, and Young Adult fiction. Each playaway is checked out with your patron card for two weeks, with the option for one renewal.

Perpetual Book Sale

Check out our new ongoing Book Sale in the Adult Department. Gently used books, videos and audiobooks will be sold for 50 cents a piece. Please pay at the front desk. The displays are located in the hallway across from the copy machines. Check them often! The materials will be replaced every two weeks! Don’t forget to check out the Book Sales in the Children’s Department and Young Adult Department, movies too! Remember teachers… books to build your class libraries are free!

Talk About Literature in Kansas is a program for every Kansan who loves to read and discuss good books. The Friends of the Grant County Library Foundation is proud to sponsor for Spring, 2010; Today’s Mysteries: Since Sherlock Holmes was “born” more than a hundred years ago, mystery stories have become one of America’s most popular forms of fiction. Holme’s creator, Arthur Conan Doyle, first put it all together by writing stories in which appealing and eccentric characters encounter and solve puzzles, thereby restoring order and justice. In mystery fiction’s inter-war Golden Age, writers such as Agatha Christie, Rex Stout, and Dorothy Sayers deepened but also continued Doyle’s original great formula. Thanks to them, such mysteries today give us not only plots to debate, writing to analyze, characterizations and motives to discuss, but also memorable pictures of a certain time and society. However, these pictures are almost always of a quite narrow , privileged, slice of society. Only at the end of the era did “mean streets” writers such as Raymond Chandler write about other kinds of lives, and about the flaws within the dominant order. Today, mysteries have exploded far beyond their Golden Age beginnings, and so give us a much broader view of the world and the many kinds of people and problems within it. Beyond the traditional “cozies” that continue Golden Age styles, mysteries now include spy thrillers, police procedurals, and psychological cliff-hangers. There are female as well as male private investigators out on the “mean streets.” Readers are now introduced to almost every possible culture and historic era. Although often called “Who-dun-Its,” todays mysteries are quite often instead “Why-Dun-Its,” exploring psychological motivation and the problems of modern society. But there are also strong continuities to the best features of past mysteries. The best mysteries now as then are compellingly written and strongly plotted, feature fascinating characters, and still raise crucial questions of justice, societal problems, and human motivation. These characteristics, both new and old, make for stimulating and meaningful humanities discussions.
